What makes Grand Turk special
Capital island: It’s home to Cockburn Town, the territory’s administrative center, with colourful colonial buildings and a laid-back local feel.
Beautiful beaches: Long white-sand beaches with clear turquoise water, especially near the cruise center.
World-class diving: Just offshore is the famous “Grand Turk Wall,” where the ocean floor drops steeply into deep water—great for scuba diving, snorkeling, and whale watching during migration season.
Cruise destination: Many Caribbean cruises stop here, making it one of the best-known cruise ports in the region.
Salt ponds and history: The island’s old salt industry helped build its economy centuries ago, and you can still see the salinas (salt ponds).
NASA connection: Astronaut John Glenn came here after his 1962 Friendship 7 mission splashed down nearby.
Quick facts
About 7 miles (11 km) long
Relatively flat, with lots of donkeys and wild horses roaming around
Known for calm island life rather than big resorts or nightlife
Grand Turk is often described as the place people visit when they want authentic Caribbean history mixed with incredible ocean views instead of a heavily developed resort scene.
Grand Turk is the historic capital island of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It’s much quieter and more historic than the larger tourist islands like Providenciales.

Lighthouse... Before the lighthouse was erected, ship captains calling on Grand Turk would have to navigate the treacherous reefs extending miles out beyond the coast. It is estimated that over 1,000 shipwrecks lie on the reefs. A brisk wracking industry followed where local seamen would row out to rescue passengers while claiming goods salvaged from the wrecked ship. Anything of value would be sold or used to their benefit. By the mid-eighteen fifties, steady trade was established and demand for the lighthouse was granted. In 1948 the United States established a Navy base adjacent to the lighthouse. Currently, home to the Turks & Caicos Islands Community College, the base was a top-secret listening station tuned in to the task of identifying passing enemy ships and submarines.
Explore the lighthouse grounds during our 15-minute tram stop. Friendly donkeys usually greet trams and the elevated sea views are amazing.
