Altos de Chavón & Cave of Wonders Experience
Discover two of the Dominican Republic's most fascinating attractions on this unforgettable cultural and historical excursion.
Altos de Chavón
Your journey begins with a scenic drive to the spectacular Altos de Chavón in La Romana, a remarkable $40 million cultural project that opened in 1982. Perched high above the Chavón River, this unique attraction was carefully designed to replicate a charming 16th-century Mediterranean village, complete with cobbled streets, artisan workshops, galleries and stunning river views.
During your guided tour, you'll discover the village's rich history and artistic heritage while exploring its picturesque lanes and impressive architecture. Highlights include the famous Altos de Chavón Amphitheatre, which has hosted legendary performers such as Frank Sinatra, Santana and many other internationally renowned artists.
You will also visit the beautiful St. Stanislaus Church, famously attended by Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley shortly before their wedding.
As you wander through this enchanting village, you'll have the opportunity to admire panoramic views of the Chavón River and surrounding countryside, explore local art galleries and craft workshops, and experience the vibrant atmosphere that makes Altos de Chavón one of the Dominican Republic's most celebrated cultural landmarks.
Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders)
Your adventure continues to the impressive Cueva de las Maravillas, one of the Dominican Republic's most accessible and significant natural attractions.
Located approximately 25 metres underground between La Romana and San Pedro de Macorís, this remarkable cave system is considered home to the first rock art museum in the Caribbean. The cave features more than 500 ancient Taíno pictographs and petroglyphs of outstanding archaeological and historical importance.
Designed with accessibility in mind, the site features well-maintained pathways, ramps, walkways and a modern elevator, allowing visitors of all abilities to comfortably explore its underground wonders.
As you journey through the cave, you'll marvel at spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, fascinating geological formations, crystal-clear underground pools and beautifully preserved artwork created by the island's indigenous Taíno people centuries ago. Atmospheric lighting throughout the cave enhances its natural beauty, creating a truly magical experience.
